Senior Madison Harris has been spending her time in social distancing working out. While already an athlete, Harris notes the importance of staying in shape and getting outside in times that are constantly changing.

Staff Pick : Working Out

Hey friends, teachers, or really anyone who decides to stop and read this. If you are like me, or really anyone in the world right now you are likely bored out of your mind because of social distancing and quarantine. The entire Brantley Banner staff has awesome ideas about how you can stay busy, but mine is probably going to be the least popular.

During your extra time at home, you should ( drumroll please ) exercise! I have realized during this ever changing time that we have almost zero control over the things around us, but for the most part we can have control over our health. As I am an athlete, getting outside to workout regularly during this time has been super important to me and my success in swimming, but it has also shown me so many beautiful benefits to working out I did not and could not have expected. For one, working out gives your mind a break. The news, our phones, everything around us right now is packed with information about the virus, and frankly I think we all need a break from that during some parts of our day. Working out in any form allows your mind to focus on something else for a bit. For me, the few minutes of working out everyday has been giving me space to breathe and reflect on everything happening. If you are looking to start working out find a local trail near you or download the peloton app there is a 90 day free trial.

Secondly, working out makes your days go by faster. For a few days, I lounged around like a couch potato and did not work out. These days, felt like months, heck even years. I realized that getting outside, or going to a space in my house to workout allowed me to have a much needed break in my day. Working out allowed me to get moving and my day went by faster. If I haven’t convinced you yet, I’ll leave you with this ; working out may not always be your number one priority, but this extra time we all have is the perfect chance to get out there and try. You do not have to be perfect, or amazing, but I think you should give it a go.
