The school has many clubs and sports that every student participates in. For example, the pickleball club has recently become popular. The pickleball club has recently started their second annual tournament which began on Nov. 13.
The club started last year and is sponsored by math teacher Christopher Stanley. Members of the club practice and hold their tournament on a court in Sweetwater Oaks. The club was started by current seniors Daniel Flores and Jakob Howard.
“I prepare for the tournament by drilling and playing games with my family as well as my partner Reid,” senior Blake Curtis said. “Reid and I do drilling weekly.”
Members practice as often as they can. They try to meet up and help each other prepare for when they compete or want to have a good time.
“I played pickleball at the meetings each week and sometimes on weekends or after school if I have time,” senior and club historian Chris Bano said.
This is the club’s second tournament that they have had. The most recent tournament they had this year was an olympics style tournament and was seen with members Mattox Pearce and Malone Pearce winning. Beating out last year’s winner Matias Cevallos and Emilio Bacardi.
“Me and my best friend Jakob decided to make this club because of the strong interest we had with the sport thanks to some friends of ours.” club vice president Daniel Flores said.
Throughout the tournament players faced mental blocks and fought to be the best pickleball duo that school has to offer, But in the end the promise of a good time with athletics and friends gets every player’s confidence up.
“My thoughts part way through the tournament were we have some really good players, but nothing me and Reid can’t handle and compete with,” Curtis said.
