Desiree Hagg Makes All National Band
January 27, 2019
Being a successful musician is a difficult feat, one that requires the ability to persist regardless of the challenges that are faced. Senior Desiree Hagg has managed to overcome each and every barrier by becoming not only the Band Captain, but by also receiving the honor of acceptance into All-National Band.
All-National Band is a gathering of the top performing high school musicians in the country. To be chosen, each student must be accepted into the state-level Honor Band and then submit an audition tape to the sponsor of the event, the National Association for Music Education. After a series of rehearsals there is a final concert that is split between two days, where the band performs for their family and friends, while enjoying the pleasures that accompany the privilege of being directed by a guest conductor. This outstanding achievement is a substantial demonstration of a musician’s prowess and dedication.
“These are both incredible honors for a music student,” Band Director Bradley Wharton said. “It displays the musical maturity and understanding that Desiree has and also reinforces her dedication and work ethic towards her craft.”
In order to be a successful Band Captain, Hagg has to be well respected by her peers, a talented musician, and willing to make sacrifices for the betterment of the band. The Band Captain’s job is to lead and direct the eight leadership members, as well as all the other musicians in the band. They also act as a representative for the students when there are any discrepancies between the band and the director.
“She’s the most responsible out of our top nine leadership,” senior Julia Kim said. “She’s basically the leadership of the leadership, directly under Mr. Wharton.”
Although Hagg’s directors have been a vital part of her overall musical progression, Hagg’s parents continue to aid and encourage her in every possible way. Although they are not musically inclined, they have given Hagg their full support throughout her musical career.
“Neither one of my parents are very musical, but they are very supportive of me,” Hagg said. “They’ve bought me countless boxes of reeds and have attended every one of my concerts. When I told them I wanted to major in music, they gave me their full support. They’ve definitely influenced me to pursue what I enjoy.”
