On Nov. 1st the school’s class of 2025 Instagram page posted an announcement about this year’s prom. Prom this school year will take place in April, but this year the school is having a combined junior-senior prom. This announcement post flooded the student body’s feed as it was reposted and shared, resulting in mixed reactions from all students.
Prom is a celebrational party for the graduating class that takes place sometime during the second semester. The senior class can invite any other student they would like so people in younger grades can go celebrate with their friends too. The decision to combine this year’s prom was not an easy one and took a large amount of deliberation.
“The decision was made based on [many] factors,” said junior Kaylee Klinger, a member of the student government association. “The rising cost of venue and food makes it harder each year to keep a manageable ticket price, so by making it a junior-senior prom it enables [the school] to keep prices manageable for all students.”
Additionally, venues require schools to provide an estimate of how many students will be attending, because the class of 2025 numbers are lower, the school is not the most prioritized to gain the venue. Therefore, the combined prom will bring in more attendees and more profit, which raises the chances of gaining the desired venue.
“It’s a fun opportunity for juniors to have fun with their junior friends,” said junior Kallista Hill. “And regardless, many juniors would most likely go anyway, so it allows them a stress-free way to go.
Finally, juniors attend prom every year with their senior friends, the prom becoming combined just makes it official that the juniors are invited. However, many seniors still dislike the idea, because they believe it is their privilege as the graduating class to have their own prom.
“I have never been to prom before because I was waiting for it to be special when I was a senior,” said senior Naomi Cervero-Gifford. “I mean why would I want to take away the whole prom/graduating experience.”
